Polymers such as polyethylene and polypropylene, are not generally biodegradable. This is the reason why people propose not to use plastic products, especially hotel disposable amenities.
On the contrary, providing travel-sized hotel amenities, like shampoo, conditioner, bath gel and body lotion etc. for guests, could enhance hotels brand value.
So, how to make these plastic products be more environment friendly? There is an additive masterbatch added to polyethylene and polypropylene to impart a controlled oxobiodegradable characteristic. This is a most affordable way to make plastic biodegradable.
How it works? Additive masterbatch is firstly causing a serial reduction in molecular weight to make polymer acute embritlement and microfragmentation. Secondly, when molecular weight has been sufficiently reduced to be available for microbial attack, biodegradable biotically breaks down the degraded residues to carbon dioxide, water and biomass.
How long does it take to degrade? Plastic products with additive masterbatch, its degradation must be happened under the condition of muggy and microbial environment. During general shipment, working and store condition, plastic would not biodegraded. After 3 to 9 months in wasteyard, plastic film results in acute embrittlement and microfragmentation, then within 18 to 24 months, it would be biodegraded completely by microorganism.
Currently, additive materbatch is widely used in PE, PP and EVA plastics, and mostly applied to plastic bags, films, disposable cutlery and disposable hotel amenity bottles and tubes etc.
